Imports to the Canary Islands

Best Logistics Canarias operates its own weekly import service from various ports to Tenerife and Las Palmas, and from anywhere in the world.

The fact that the Canary Islands are an outermost region of the European Union means that its tax and fiscal system is different from the rest of the countries that make up the European Union. This system is called the Canary Islands Special Regime and therefore, the importation of products within this system involves the imposition of specific taxes.

These taxes are:

  • Goods of Community origin (including Spain).
  • A.I.E.M. (Arbitrio sobre Importaciones y Entregas de Mercancías en las islas Canarias).
  • IGIC (Canary Islands General Indirect Tax). Its operation is identical to VAT (VAT in English) and therefore it is compensated with the IGIC that must be passed on to the buyer.

Goods of non-EU origin.

  • Tariffs: In addition to the taxes and rates mentioned above (AIEM and IGIC), in the event that the merchandise was of extra-community origin, the tariffs that the European Union would mark for that merchandise in the event that it was imported by any other Community Customs would also be applied to it.

Importing to the Canary Islands

The Canary Islands, being an archipelago with a population of just over 2 million inhabitants, needs to import all kinds of goods, manufactured, equipment and consumer goods. It is estimated that between 80 and 90% of the food consumed in the archipelago comes from imports.

In the case of imports, the product will have to be collected at the port and the AIEM will have to be paid, as long as the buyer is a company located in the Canary Islands.

In the Canary Islands, the main products exported are agricultural products, especially bananas, present in almost all the islands, and tomatoes, abundant in Gran Canaria, Tenerife and Fuerteventura.
